Dr. Huang received concurrent BS in Chemistry and MS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from University of Chicago in 1990. He then entered the Medical Scientist Training Program at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine with PhD in Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology with an emphasis in cellular immunology.

After Pediatric internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, he completed combined pediatric hematology-oncology clinical fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital and the National Cancer Institute, before joining the Laboratory of Immunology at National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases as a postdoctoral fellow. In 2006, Dr. Huang joined UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital as a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2012, tenure in 2014, and full Professor in 2017. Dr. Huang holds the Theresia G. & Stuart F. Kline Family Foundation Chair in Pediatric Oncology at UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital / Angie Fowler AYA Cancer Institute. He leads the Cancer Immunology Initiative and serves as co-leader of the Hematopoiesis & Immune Cell Biology Scientific Program at Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. In this capacity, Dr. Huang oversees immune cell-based and immune modulatory cancer therapeutic development at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is also the Director of the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Clinical Fellowship Training Program at UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital since 2007.

In 2016, Dr. Huang was appointed a member of the Cancer Moonshot Initiative Blue Ribbon Panel Working Group on Caner Immunotherapy & Prevention. He serves on scientific advisory committees for numerous national childhood cancer foundations and National Comprehensive Cancer Center Adolescent & Young Adult Cancer Panel. Dr. Huang has received recognition for mentoring, including the CWRU School of Medicine's Faculty Diversity Award in 2016, CWRU John S. Diekhoff Award for Excellence in Graduate Mentoring in 2017, and CWRU School of Medicine PREP Mentor of the Year Award in 2018. Dr. Huang was elected as a steering committee member of the Coalition for Pediatric Medical Research in 2019.

Dr. Huang's research focuses on understanding immune regulation at the tissue level in cancer, with a particular emphasis in the understanding of complex cellular cross-talk between immune cells and tumor cells within hematopoietic and solid tumor microenvironment, while translating these novel insights into clinical trials for the treatment of cancers affecting the pediatric, adolescent and young adult populations.
