Profile

Warren J. Leonard, MD received his BA in mathematics, magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from Princeton and his MD from Stanford. After residency training in medicine and research in biochemistry at Washington University in St. Louis, Dr. Leonard was a postdoctoral fellow in the National Cancer Institute.

He started his own laboratory in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and then joined the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, where he is Chief of the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology and Director of the Immunology Center as well as an NIH Distinguished Investigator. He has authored more than 375 publications and over 20 patents.

He is an Associate Editor and former Co-Editor of Immunity and a member of the Faculty of 1000. He is past-President of the International Cytokine Society, past Vice-President of the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences (FAES), served on the Council of the Association of American Physicians and on the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Beutler Research Program of Excellence in Genomic Medicine.

Dr. Leonard is the recipient of the American Federation for Clinical Research Foundation Outstanding Investigator Award, the Food and Drug Administration Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research Outstanding Service Award, the American Association of Immunologists (AAI)-Huang Foundation Meritorious Career Award, the Honorary Lifetime Membership Award of the International Cytokine and Interferon Society, the Milstein Award of the International Cytokine and Interferon Society, and the Harrington Prize of the Harrington Discovery Institute and the American Society for Clinical Investigation. He is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of the National Academy of Inventors, the National Academy of Medicine, the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
