The Mount Sinai Health Foundation has awarded 2023 Maurice Saltzman Award to Jonathan S. Stamler, MD, President of Harrington Discovery Institute. This award recognizes Dr. Stamler's exceptional contributions to the field of healthcare and medicine. Established in 1983, the award pays tribute to Maurice Saltzman, a visionary philanthropist with a deep commitment to health and medical advancements.
The Maurice Saltzman Award is presented to individuals or organizations in Greater Cleveland who have demonstrated remarkable achievements or made significant contributions of national or international importance to the health interests of the community.
Dr. Stamler is being recognized for his groundbreaking research which focuses on the impact of exercise on brain health and the development of personalized exercise routines to combat neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Stamler and his team have discovered that a molecule called Nitric Oxide (NO) is released from red blood cells during exercise, which helps dilate small blood vessels and improve blood flow to the brain. They found that mice lacking NO had problems with brain blood flow and memory.
To better oxygenate and nourish the brain, Dr. Stamler is working on a device and mobile app that can measure the amount of NO released from red blood cells during exercise. They are also developing an algorithm called "useable oxygen" (UO2) to track the amount of oxygen consumed during exercise and predict fitness levels. This will help personalize exercise routines and reduce the risk of dementia.
Dr. Jonathan S. Stamler said, "I am deeply honored to be recognized by the Mount Sinai Health Foundation with this esteemed award. It is a testament to the dedication and collaborative efforts of our team at Harrington Discovery Institute. We remain committed to advancing innovative research and translating scientific discoveries into meaningful treatments for patients."
The Maurice Saltzman Award serves as a testament to Dr. Stamler's exceptional contributions to the field and underscores his commitment to improving healthcare outcomes through groundbreaking research and innovative approaches.
