Pioneering Philanthropy in Science and Medicine
Ron Harrington, a visionary entrepreneur and philanthropist, has been honored for his extraordinary contributions to science and medicine. Recognized by Crain's Cleveland Business in its 2024 class of 8 Over 80, Harrington's innovative approach to philanthropy has left an indelible mark on the drug discovery landscape. This accolade serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment to making a difference.
From his roots in Baltimore to his successful career in business, including the acquisition and expansion of Edgepark Medical Supplies, Harrington’s journey has been defined by a commitment to innovation and impact. Following a personal health scare, he and his family made a significant gift to University Hospitals, establishing the Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute in 2008.
However, it was the creation of The Harrington Project for Discovery & Development (Harrington Discovery Institute) in 2012 that truly showcased his pioneering spirit. With a $50 million gift, Ron and his family embarked on a mission to revolutionize drug discovery and development by bridging the gap between nonprofit and for-profit models to accelerate promising discoveries into medicines. Today, Harrington Discovery Institute has funded 188 scholars, facilitated the launch of 39 companies and supported 21 new medicines advancing to clinical trials.
