Breaking Into the Brain: Overcoming Barriers to Understand Autism and Brain Tumors

Listen to the full episode of Science@UH to learn more.

In a new episode of the Science@UH podcast, Daniel Simon, MD, welcomes Matthew Anderson, MD, PhD, and Tyler Miller, MD, PhD, for a conversation on how immune biology is transforming the field of neuroscience and accelerating the path from discovery to patient care.

Dr. Anderson, Investigator at Harrington Discovery Institute and Co-Director of the Oxford Harrington Rare Disease Centre—a partnership between the University of Oxford and the Harrington Discovery Institute at University Hospitals—brings a global perspective shaped by his roles at UH, Case Western Reserve University, and the University of Oxford. Joining him is Dr. Miller, the Paul and Betsy Shiverick Professor of Immuno-Oncology at UH and director of the Cellular Therapy Core at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Together, they explore emerging insights into the immune system’s role in neurological disease, from autism and obesity to novel CAR T‑cell approaches for glioblastoma, as well as the persistent challenge of delivering therapies across the blood–brain barrier. The discussion highlights the power of interdisciplinary science and mission-driven collaboration in advancing medicine.

The episode underscores the shared alignment between Harrington Discovery Institute, the OHC, and University Hospitals in translating bold scientific discoveries into clinical impact—demonstrating how partnerships across institutions and disciplines are reshaping the future of care.
